Ubuntu 11.10 and ATI Mobility Radeon 5000
I recently upgraded my HP Pavalion dv6 laptop from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 and have run into all kinds of issues with the ATI Graphics Card that comes with the laptop. This has been causing me a lot of issues as the Additional ATI Drivers downloaded via Ubuntu work ok in Unity but don't work at all in Gnome 3. To get the graphics card to work in both Unity and in Gnome 3 I decided to manually install the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers for Linux which can be found here.
Once you have downloaded the drivers you will want to follow these instructions, which guided me through the installation of the new driver without any issues at all.
The only issue that I did find was when I went into Ubuntu and De-Activated the ATI Catalyst Driver via the Additional Drivers option and rebooting my computer. When the computer rebooted I was unable to see anything on the screen except the top menu bar and nothing in Unity would work for me and I was unable to run the command line configurations found in the instructions. To get arround this, I held down <alt><cntl><del> and logged out of Unity. Then I held down <alt>>cntl><fn><f1> and this switched me to the tty1 prompt. From there I could login to my account and run all the necessary commands.
After the installation I was able to use Gnome 3. The only issue is that the screen will flicker when doing some of the transition effects.
